New Vein Clinic Offers Relief To Leg Pain

My name is Tamam Mohamad and I have been a physician/cardiologist with the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) for more than 11 years. I recently began seeing more patients at DMC Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital with a vey common condition: vein disease in the legs. Vein disease is a very common condition, especially for those who are 30-40 years of age, are diabetic, active smokers and female. We commonly see more females than males with irritation relating to pain in the legs.

Valves not properly enabling blood flow through the veins cause this common condition. In the past, this was only fixed by surgically removing abnormal vein segments causing the problem.

What we have just done is brought what is a unique procedure for the area to the hospital— a new vein clinic with immediate availability for appointments to treat symptoms of pain and swelling in the legs with a non-surgical IV procedure using laser treatment.

With this new treatment in the area, those suffering from pain in the legs relating to vein disease or poor circulating in the legs don’t need surgery. This newer technology, Endovenous laser treatment, is uses a laser fiber, which is passed through a thin tube (catheter) into the vein. While doing this, I, the physician, watch the vein on a screen. The laser is less painful than vein ligation and stripping surgery, and it has a shorter recovery time.

Additionally, our clinic is also treating Peripheral Arterial Disease. This is a condition which results from poor circulation or ulcers in the legs. Patients will commonly come in with complaints of pain in their legs upon walking and I can provide the treatment through an IV without surgery or skin cut.

The easiest way to determine if you should come see us in our new vein clinic is if you have pain in your legs, swelling, varicose veins, etc. The first appointment will be a simple, quick, painless, 10-minute screening. With a vein disease diagnoses, you will then be eligible for our new, same day, outpatient IV procedure—without needing surgery to solve the problem.

Dr. Tamam Mohamad, M.D. is a Cardio Team One physician with the Detroit Medical Center and Associate Professor at Wayne State University. He is board certified with the American Board of Internal Medicine, with specialty certification in interventional cardiology, cardiovascular medicine, internal medicine, echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, CT Angiogram and vascular ultrasound.
