Coronary Artery Disease

The Heart and Vascular Institute is proud to be among the first cardiologist groups in the region to offer a new treatment for coronary artery disease (CAD) called Diamondback 360°. This new treatment option has given hope to CAD patients suffering from this deadly disease.

Coronary artery disease is the most common form of heart disease, with more than 17 million people diagnosed in the United State each year. According to the American Heart Association, this disease accounts for more deaths than cancer, chronic respiratory disease and auto accidents combined.

CAD is a condition that occurs when plaque, a fatty material, builds up on the walls of the coronary arteries. These arteries play an important role in circulating oxygen-rich blood to and from the heart. The accumulation of the plaque causes the arteries to harden and narrow, which then restricts blood flow through the heart, known as atherosclerosis.

The Diamondback 360° system has proven to be a major medical advancement that gives patients a better chance against the devastating effects of CAD.

What is the Diamondback 360° Coronary System?

The Diamondback 360® Coronary System eliminates fibrotic and calcified plaque that has accumulated in the coronary arteries and is preventing blood flow. Used during stent replacement as a way of opening up blocked passages, the system consists of a small diamond-coated crown device that is mounted on a catheter. This catheter is threaded and spun on the proprietary ViperWire™ Guide Wire, which is run by centrifugal force. While the crown rotates, the centrifugal force pushes the crown against the plaque and removes small quantities of it with every orbit. A saline solution is used to lubricate the device and flush the artery during the process.

Differential sanding is another important Diamondback 360° Coronary System feature as it allows the system to differentiate between compliant arterial tissue and hardened plaque so that compliant tissues are then flexed away from the crown as it rotates. As fibrotic and calcified plaque is not compliant it provides resistance — allowing the orbiting crown to sand the plaque and turn it into small particles that are then absorbed by the body.

Coronary Artery Disease Treatment

There area variety of treatments for CAD, ranging from conservative and minimally invasive procedures and approaches to more invasive open chest surgeries. Depending on the severity of a patient's condition, the doctor will determine the most effective and appropriate course of treatment for each patient.
